Fresh Insights, Big Ideas – Discover What's Shaping the New Zealand FMCG Sector in China!
The New Zealand Business Roundtable in China (NZBRiC) is delighted to extend an invitation to our Industry and Corporate Members as we host our third FMCG Industry Forum. Topically focused on 'Mapping New Zealand's Route to China's Next Growth Cities', we've prepared an elite selection of quality speakers to present during this quarter's forum.
The first presentation will be led by Abby Ye, Global Director of Food Service & China President at Synlait Milk Limited (NZBRiC Corporate Member). Abby will detail opportunities and methodologies to entering China's Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities with an inspiring case study.
The second presentation will feature Steve Jones, New Zealand's Trade Commissioner to Shanghai at NZTE. Steve will dive into the preliminary findings of NZTE's 'China Select – City Matrix' report, heat mapping key sub-regional cities on economic potential, attractiveness, personality, and more.
The final presentation will be delivered by David Downs, CEO of New Zealand Story. David will highlight the DNA of New Zealand's brand and illustrate how applying these strengths into new markets can make the difference between entering a market and owning it.
Leading this session will be FMCG Industry Chair David Boyle, CEO of Primary Collaboration New Zealand, bringing each speaker theme together into an open discussion and Q+A among attendees. After the forum is officially concluded, members are invited to join for networking and drinks at a nearby venue.

David Boyle
CEO, PCNZ Ltd
David was appointed as CEO of Primary Collaboration New Zealand (Shanghai) Ltd in April of 2019. David first came to China with Lion Nathan brewers in 1997 as one of their first group of Directors. After ten years with Lion Nathan, he has subsequently held COO, and CEO roles in local Chinese, and American businesses based in Shanghai. In 2008, he and his wife formed their own HR and consulting business in Shanghai supporting International companies’ entry to China, with recruitment, coaching, and legal guidance.
David has an undergraduate degree in languages and Chinese history, and a Master’s degree in Business Administration.

Abby Ye joined Synlait as Global Director of Food Service and the President of China in March 2023.
Before working for Synlait, Abby was the Marketing Director of APAC for Savencia Fromage and Dairy Company, based in Singapore. During this time, Abby gained a wealth of experience in marketing and business development, working with companies and partners across North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, as well as across Asian markets.
Abby holds a Masters Degree from Fudan University and is a member of Mensa International.
Steve Jones
Trade Commissioner, NZ Consulate General in Shanghai
Steve Jones was appointed New Zealand’s Trade Commissioner to Shanghai in February 2024, following an extended tenure in Latin America as Regional Director from 2018 to 2024.
A seasoned diplomat with deep expertise in business strategy and development, Steve previously served as Consul-General and Trade Commissioner across the Middle East, Africa, and Pakistan from 2011 to 2014. Prior to that, he held a range of leadership roles within NZTE, including Operations Manager and Sector Director, overseeing key initiatives across the education, agriculture, creative industries, and professional services sectors between 2002 and 2011.
With a distinguished record of diplomatic service and project leadership, Steve brings invaluable insight and experience to advancing New Zealand–China trade relations.

David has had a successful career in the private and public sector and is now CEO of The New Zealand Story, an ambitious government-funded organisation marketing New Zealand to the world.
He also acts as a consultant and is a director on several boards, including as Chair of The Icehouse. David is an ex-comedian, TV and radio actor, semi-finalist for New Zealander of the Year, cancer survivor and a published author of the books No.8 Re-wired, No.8 Recharged, A Mild Touch of the Cancer, and Silver Linings.
David founded SOS Business, a hugely successful not-for-profit initiative to help cafes and other small businesses during Covid-19.
