Mike Underhill (Founder and Director, ScaleNZ)

Mike Underhill

Founder and Director, ScaleNZ

Mike is the founder of Scale NZ, a market research firm that uncovers unexpected insights by questioning conventional wisdom. He brings over two decades of experience across Asia and New Zealand, spanning brand strategy, comms/media impact, product development, and consumer understanding.

With personal knowledge of Asian consumer markets, Mike brings cultural fluency and hard-won insight to the challenges facing New Zealand exporters. In addition to working in China for over 20 years, Mike has led B2C and B2B projects in Japan, Southeast Asia and North America across categories including dairy, seafood, beverages and many others.

In their latest report, From Boom to Balance, Scale NZ explores what happens when the conventional logic is reversed. Instead of asking if people agree that “We are from NZ, and here’s why you should buy us” the report asks: “Is it enough to just be from NZ?”

The findings challenge long-held assumptions about NZ’s relevance in China and reveal emerging perceptual barriers to growth. At a time when “Brand New Zealand” can no longer be taken for granted, Mike offers evidence-based, practical advice to help dairy exporters stay relevant and regain momentum in China.
